Earth Totems, 2022
Pineapple, coconut, cactus leather, fully recycled plastic, aluminium on linen, LED light, fixings240x120x5cm
The 2.5 metre tall ‘Earth Totems’ are climate positive. The artist explores ancient and contemporary symbolism - depicting our journey of climate change, using sustainable materials.
The symbols, which are derived from all over the world, represent our climate change journey; through destruction, chaos, time, knowledge, wisdom, consciousness, collaboration, action and hope.
The totemic wall hangings are made from sustainable materials such as cactus, apple skins and recycled metals and resins. Totems have spiritual significance and can become emblems in communities.
Science shows that time is of the essence to make the changes necessary to avoid irreparable damage to our climate. The artist believes that we don’t have 30 years to decarbonize, yet the mass delusion persists that we can continue our current way of living.
Baker use symbolism to reflect the need for deep thought and contemplation on this complex issue of climate change - a few words would not do it justice, it may appear subtle with the use of soft textile materials and cryptic symbols, yet the scale is large because there is an enormity about the impending situation.
