Inspired by ‘The Watchful Tree’ within medieval literature and myths, the sculpture explores the interconnectedness of all living things. Nature is alive and bathing in moonlight. Moonlight exposure is thought to improve relaxation by prompting the natural release of melatonin. Ayurveda holds that moon bathing (or moon gazing) increases fertility.
Baker’s sculpture uses the inclusion of feminine eyes emerging from a tree-like plant to remind the observer that Mother Nature is alive and vigilant. It also evokes the 2024 Biennale theme of ‘Foreigners Everywhere’ by prompting the viewer to consider their role as foreigners in the vast fabric of existence
